I found this:

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=U&start=2&q=http://ftp.nluug.nl/mail/mh/contrib/9302/prunemail.shar&e=42

which seems to depend on a command called scan which I don't have.

If anyone else is interested in my ruby iterator for mboxes, it is here:

http://www.eng.cse.dmu.ac.uk/~hgs/ruby/mbox_each.rb

and used in this to split mailboxes into chunks:

http://www.eng.cse.dmu.ac.uk/~hgs/ruby/split_mbox.rb

But I'm not absolutely sure of its reliablility.
