Matthias Jordan,
asked if serialmail supports outgoing SMTP authentication.

The scenario is, that you want to sent your mail via
serialmail and your SMTP relay wants you to autenticate.

Matthias told me that he already patched his serialmail.

I myself made a patch to serialmail which now supports three
authentication schemes: LOGIN PLAIN CRAM-MD5

I publish this here so that you are able to test the
changes. I would like to hear some opinions :-).
I will publish the patch on my website soon.

If anyone has hints who I should send the patch to (so that
it might get a broader audience), please mail me

Usage:
The programs which change are:
serialsmtp 
maildirsmtp

both accept now up to 6 parameters instead of 4.
Parameter 5 should be your username on your SMTP relay,
Parameter 6 should be your password on your SMTP relay.
If you omit password and username no authentication will be done.

For example I call maildirsmtp in this way:
maildirsmtp /home/rohloff/pppout rohloff-ppp- mail.gmx.de \
  curin.highspeed  MyUsername  MyPassword
