I never answer requests that require me to go on-line and launch a
WWW browser. I happen to read most of my mail offline (as many people
who travel often do), and I ofen read my mail remotely with only a
ssh shell access (which does not allow me to see images).

I would say that mail should be handled by mail, as asynchronously as
possible, which is the case with A-S-K at this time.
