Ah, good you could find an explanation for this strange behavior.
There's nothing worse than unexplained weirdness. :)

Think about the following situation:

1) ASK receives an email from someone it does not know about
2) ASK sends the confirmation
3) You edit the whitelist.txt file to add someone by hand, but while you
   have the file in memory...
4) ASK receives the confirmation and adds the user who send an email on
   (1) to your whitelist
5) Unaware of this, you save the whitelist you have in your editor and
   lose that entry from your whitelist
6) User in (1) sends you another email, but gets very confused because
   he/she already replied to the confirmation!

See?

That's why ASK checks as many files as you want, but will only modify
the first one in your list (by default, whitelist.txt). The rule is:
Leave whitelist.txt to ASK or manage it through remote commands. The
others, you can manually edit.
