I hate to reply to my own question but I've solved it, though I don't
understand completely how.

I had installed from a tar ball since using a deb package was impossible.
Debian stable uses an older version of Python. So I downloaded Python2.2
sources built them, installed them and then installed ask in /usr/local/src.

What solved the problem was making a symlink from /usr/lib/ask to
/usr/local/src/ask-2.4.1. Even though in my .forward file I did reference
the complete path /usr/local/src/ask-2.4.1 it tossed errors.

I also changed my .forward file to reference /usr/lib/ask/ path, mainly
because it's shorter.

Once the program quite crashing I had some other minor problems with the
format of the forward file. The docs called out clearly to change the
pathing to the ask.py file but did not clearly say anything about the rest
of the line.

Specifically it says:

Create a file named $HOME/.forward with the following line:

"|/path/ask.py --loglevel=5 --logfile=/your_home/ask.log --home=/your_home"

Make sure you substitute ``path'' for the correct location where the ask.py
executable is installed.

I would change the last line to read:

Make sure you substitute ``path'' for the correct location where the ask.py
executable is installed and "your_home" to the complete path where your
home directory exists.

Yes it's a minor point but when you are having other problems you are loth
to change things unless instructed. I was not sure if that was sometype of
key word and was supposed to be left alone.

Anyway it's working now so I'm happy.

Cheers,

David
