the latter (as it seems); TRE gets passed an invalid preg, its internal
   checks don't suffice and boom.

Bug seems in our regex cache handler in crmregex_tre.c - if you check the
trace (on amd64 at least) you'd see it never hit a 'found it', moreover
there's junk beyond the regex, eg:

Speaking of which, when I try to apply this patch, I get:

  # patch -p1 < prp.px
  patching file crmregex_tre.c
  Hunk #1 FAILED at 25.
  Hunk #2 FAILED at 35.
  Hunk #3 FAILED at 76.
  Hunk #4 FAILED at 142.
  Hunk #5 FAILED at 178.
  Hunk #6 FAILED at 199.
  Hunk #7 FAILED at 234.
7 out of 7 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file crmregex_tre.c.rej
  #

Any clue? Manually looking at the files reveals nothing obviously wrong.
