I'd rather consider txt2man, which allows for 'source' manpages in plain
text nearly like the current QUICKREF. It'd be simpler to maintain, it'd
make use of diff/patch on man pages more {use,meaning}ful, it'd allow for
such manpages-text to be embedded (maybe gz'd) into the binary - I love
self-documenting programs.

perhaps mantra+deity were right - problem was, were they up in buggy
version of Hyperspace? ;)
