AFAIK it is usually presumed that there will be an "official" git
repository, the one that is maintained by the project leader, and from
which the "official distributions" are produced. Everyone can sync from
that repository and *not* make changes to their own copy, to stay in the
"main line". Those willing to experiment may make changes to their local
copies of the repositories; and pulling changes from one repository and
merging them into another should be "as painless as possible". Of course
there can be "mirrors" of the repositories, and I am willing to maintain
one such mirror.

disclaimer: I am by no means an expert in git.

Eugene
