Just in case, anything else in there that's not in mainline? So I can
go and re-invent _other_ wheels. ;-)

Yes, no segv when inlen < maxlen, which is generally the case.
'generally' is the operative word here. I'd rather like my production
code to have a sort of 'always' quality, because as it turns out this
took us 2 bloody years to rediscover this bugger, so I'd rather have
the whole routine plugged for fringe cases like these.
