bill, one trick I use for minimizing virtual machine size is to use the host
filesystem to hold and share all of my working files between different virtual
machines.  Just make each virtual machine about 8 GB using the expanding virtual
machine file, mount your working file directory on the host OS via NFS and you
should be good to go.  It also makes it easier to backup your virtual machines
when they are not running.

If it turns out you guess wrong on the virtual machine file size, you can expand
it and then boot up that virtual machine with a live CD version of gparted and
expand the file system.

I recommend working with virtual box instead of VM Ware.  It seems to be faster
and is definitely easier to work with.
