Debian Main (all of which software is free), gives me a choice of Xen,
virtualbox-ose and KVM. I know people who have encountered success with Xen,
but not with KVM, although that might have been due to configuration issues.

I agree totally with the above.

Fedora, for one, are moving toward Kvm, and according to statements published
at LWN, Xen is coming closer to inclusion in the mainline Linux kernel.
