I looked at the possibility that truncating the file was due to a
non-CRM memory constraint and devised the following test:

The results are the same in 20080630-BlameVT or BlameBarack, so it's
not a build issue and the file lengths are exactly the same even when I
stuff another 96k into memory first. I'm pretty sure this means that I'm
getting a premature EOF. Is there a way around this besides writing to
disk? It looks like 0.09 seconds on paper, but it could expand out to
2.5 minutes of real time in the production environment.
