hm, SYSCALL? from QUICKREF :

                (:out:)             - var-expanded varname to place results
                                      into (MUST pre-exist, can be null if
                                      you don't want to read the process's
                                      output (yet, or at all).  Limit per
                                      syscall is 256 Kbytes.  You _MUST_
                                      specify this if you want to use the
                                      :status: variable).  This is
                                      a surgical alter.

just wondering if you're seeing the quoted i/o size limit - can you post 
a snippet of code where this problem shows up?
