to another user on i386.

The very first thing that comes to my mind is what exactly was 20080330.
IIRC it was some snapshot, very likely not a random CVS snapshot but
some version semi-recommended for testing and use ("bleeding edge"
tarball).

The only other special thing I can see is the following patch that was
applied to 20080330 in Debian (and is no longer applied to 20090423):


Otherwise there should be nothing special, just common things like using
possibly different -O level during compilation, possibly different libc
and libtre versions etc.

This is strange.  Did you test it with the Ubuntu packages (they should
be exactly the same as the Debian ones except for recompilation) or with
your own hand compiled tree?

If it may help, I can send you my old .css files produced on amd64 which
worked with 20080330 but fail with 20090423.
