I *think* there's supposed to be a space there, but it's been
so long since I touched the code that I can't remember!

I *think* that a column 1 '#' can be used as a comment.

I am pretty sure that will NOT work.

I don't think so.  It's reading a line at a time.  But it's always 
possible that there's a bug.
