A follow-up.

A real more or less severe bug in this system is the non-existent host 
name shown both in reverse DNS and in mailserver greeting.

Host upstatemail.upstate.1199union.1199.org not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

Oops. Quite many mailservers simply ignore explicitly false (sic!) names 
in reverse DNS and in client greeting, and deny mail from "liars".
