I did a grand scan of 25 hosts(*), and it seems to use a custom mail 
engine rather than an open proxy (well actually I found one - 
82.55.78.173:s4:1080 - but that is probably due to a double infection, 
or a dynamic IP being reused).

(*) I probably scanned much much more than 25, but this sample was 
derived by checking my log against a list of known infected systems.
