This is completely speculation but the timing of events was highly 
coincidental.  The maintenance interval returned to normal the 
weekend that Microsoft released the patch for the WMF flaw.  I 
suspect that a huge number of previously infected systems were 
virus-scanned, cleaned and patched over that weekend.

I haven't had an opportunity to try converting to InnoDB yet.
