I don't think what I fixed was PPC-specific - it would show up on any 
machine when the counter wrapped.

There was an Altivec compilation bug reported, but it seems to be a 
compiler bug rather than our code - I've reported it to Apple.  FWIW, 
there's a similar bug affecting a different source file under Linux 
now, which is highly annoying.
