I now know what was wrong.

We have two ADSL lines into the house. We put in a load balancer 
yesterday to automatically switch between them. It seems that some web 
sites can't cope with this. Spamcop webmail is one of them (Hotmail is 
another).

We're now back to switching manually... :-(
