If you did something to change the state of your Held Mail mailbox/Folder between submitting the request for the Held Mail display (VER) and clicking on the messages to preview them, that could explain the symptoms you have presented. This type of problem doesn't happen with the Webmail view of the Held Mail mailbox/Folder (the recommended and only linked method of processing Held Mail).
