The IPB Forum app does the same thing with the blue icons ...
dark when new content exists, light blue when all read,
clicking on that icon sets the flag (and marks existing
content) as "read" ....????  Registered, logged in, and
cookies used ... actually not sure that the first two are
actually required now that you/I bring that up ... I seem
to recall that even as a Guest, one can tick the icon ...
