The "/u" (unconditional) option is no longer supported but is accepted
for backward compatability. Its purpose was to override the automatic
saving of the FAT so that accidentally formatted disks could be
recovered with the "unformat" command. Using it would save time when
formatting floppies. I'm not sure it was ever relevant for disks with
NTFS.
