What is an "A" record?

I was just fiddling around doing some lookups on various sites. 
They have an 'A record', which seems to simply be their IP?  Or 
what?  Seems like I should have been able to Google that, but ... 
got so many silly hits I gave it up :-(.  The ones that seemed 
relevent, also seemed contradictory.  ??
