The U.S. already has high court approval to tap phones under certain circumstances. The focus is on calls going to known terrorist countries or organizations. Even with the DIA/NSA computer power there is no way to listen to all calls that are made. The numbers are used to establish calling patterns, the calling patterns are used to identify people of interest and then, if necessary, court orders are sought. The problem comes in who is defined as a "person of interest." Let's face facts. The U.S. Gov is not going to tell the media what they are doing with regards to national security for the same reason the police don't tell news papers information on undercover police officers. Simply, the public can not be informed because it endangers the security of the operation and the personnel involved. -- DougW
