They are not assuming they are criminals.
Do you recommend that all policemen wear blinkers and ear defenders to
stop them looking at innocent people? Only when a crime is committed may
they then walk up and accuse them of doing something wrong?
How would the policeman know?

Just because they are recording your phone conversation does not make
you a criminal, nor does it imply that you are one.

It's not as if they are going to listen to each and every call, it will
go through the system until 'keywords' are picked up automatically then
be given a look at.

It's not going to care if I am talking to my mistress, talking dirty to
my wife, phoning a chat line, slagging off the Prime Minister/President
Shrub.

But the instant I start phoning someone asking if they can get hold of a
6 year old virgin girl that I can 'photo' at the weekend, or 'please can
I order 3 of your very best AA Missiles and have them delivered to the
parking lot at Dulles International', then I would hope the authorities
would be knocking at my door before I put the damn phone down.

I'd hardly call protecting my way of life a threat (i.e the freedom to
actually 'slag off' the prime minister, the freedom to have a mistress
and the freedom slag off my wife)..

I fully understand your concerns, but don't agree it is an infringement
of anybodies rights, and even if it were, then in this age, those rights
need amending...
