So, a bit on the conservative side, then, > are you? 1984 was fiction. I am neither conservative nor anything else. I look after my own interests (which these days my family are included in those). Anything I can do to increase the safety of my family I will consider. (Note I say consider) I don't vote Labour because my dad voted Labour and his dad voted Labour etc etc. I don't vote LibDems because of the same reasons as above, nor do I vote Conservative. I vote for which ever party has the best policy that yields the benefit to myself (and now my family). I have nothing to hide, I commit no wrong, but if I did, what argument do I have to oppose any action taken against me. I oppose the action of Guantanamo Bay, because that was just like throwing a net over a group of people and saying "Gotcha". Not all of them are guilty, and in my mind, if I were one of them being held, I'd be screaming blue murder. Because I am open to change, if a phone call I made that would prove embarrassing was released to the public and I suffered as a consequence, no doubt I would become anti-'it'. But then common sense would say that I would argue for the tightening of controls over the information, not the complete banning of the process. And if they couldn't be trusted or seen to be competent in handling the process, then yes, stop it until such time it can be controlled.
