Oh, I don't know.  Seems like you have a good clue there!

If those cleanup settings keep you 85% full in a 40 MB file then to 
float around 50% you should probably use

  40 * 0.85 = x * 0.50
          x = (40 * 0.85) / 0.5
          x = 68 MB

At least I think that's right.  :-)

Of course it assumes you've been holding at a steady state for a long time.

I agree that an auto-cleaning hash file with useful default settings is 
a great idea.  The ones you are using look pretty good to me.  I guess I 
need to figure out how to run experiments to find something like an 
optimal value.
