problems with spamprobe

I'm trying to get up and running with spamprobe.  I'm using:

SpamProbe v1.4b using Hashed-array-cached database.

The relevant part of my procmail recipe is:

:0: spamprobe.lock
SCORE=| spamprobe train

| formail -I "X-SpamProbe: $SCORE"

* ^X-SpamProbe: SPAM

I've collected a bunch of spam and a bunch of non-spam and tried to 
teach spamprobe by doing:

spamprobe good /my/non-spam/maildir/
spamprobe spam /my/spam/maildir/

Then I tried to run 'spamprobe receive' on some of the spam emails but 
none of them come back marked as spam.  The other thing I noticed is 
that the contents of my ~/.spamprobe/ directory didn't change at all 
when I ran 'spamprobe good' and 'spamprobe bad'.

% ls -l ~/.spamprobe/
total 65588
-rw-------  1 me  mygrp         0 Jul 31 12:56 lock
-rw-------  1 me  mygrp  33554232 Jul 31 11:00 sp_words.hash
-rw-r--r--  1 me  mygrp      1358 Jul 31 12:55 spamprobe.hdl

yet, I ran the 'spamprobe good/spam' stuff today (August 7th) on a 
maildir with some fresh mail.

So my guess is that somehow the database isn't getting updated and it is 
preventing spamprobe from learning how to classify spam.  When I 
configured spamprobe I used:

./configure --enable-default-8bit --prefix=/usr/pkg --host=alpha--netbsd 
--mandir=/usr/pkg/man


Any suggestions on where to go next to try and debug this?
