Here is some more extended debugging info. I hope it means something to the experts, since I am still not able to build a new database for spamprobe.

[paul@nwyfre spamprobe]$ ./spamprobe -v -v -d $HOME/.spamprobe/
usage: spamprobe [options] command [args]
 Try "spamprobe help" to list all commands and options.
  or "spamprobe help command" for detailed help on a single command.

LOCKED FILE /home/paul/.spamprobe/lock
WordData::setTodayDate: set date to 1825
USING REQUESTED DATABASE TYPE '' PATH /home/paul/.spamprobe/sp_words.hash
HASH_DIVISOR 2796181 (0x2aaa95) INDEX_LIMIT 2796186 SIZE 33554232
OPEN DATABASE /home/paul/.spamprobe/sp_words.hash
OPEN HASHFILE /home/paul/.spamprobe/sp_words.hash
error: hash file /home/paul/.spamprobe/sp_words.hash does not exist and cannot be created in read-only mode
SpamProbe v1.4d using null database.
