IIRC I ran it on Windoze using the .net runtime and on Linux using the mono runtime. (The mono runtime was a LOT slower than the .net one.) It wasn't so horribly slow that it would never get the job done, it just was slow enough that it didn't seem like a good idea to cut the C ++ code loose. I don't have enough time to work on both versions and I didn't feel that the C# version was competitive enough to let me drop the C++ version. At the time the 1.2 features hadn't been developed/released and I didn't want to drop them. Personally I think the world would be a better place if most higher level code was rewritten in Java, .net, or some other JIT'd high level language (still looking forward to doing my work in Ruby/ Parrot). I'm very happy about M$'s commitment to C#. I always wanted to start an open source project to reimplement all of the standard internet services in Java for security but never had the time. I'd like to do a C# or Java version of SP but for now I'm going to just improve the C++ version as time allows.
