One note on this - tmda-ofmipd isn't "validating" the mail simply for
the purpose of enforcing some rules it thinks emails should follow.

Rather, tmda-ofmipd must correctly parse the mail, so that any "to",
"from", etc. statements in the user's outgoing filter can be correctly
implemented.

As such, any parsing errors prevent the outgoing filter from running,
and have to be immediately reported back to the mail client as a failure.

Also, at least for the specific issue you saw, I suspect that at least
some MTAs would do the same. I know for sure that my postfix setup
validates local recipients at SMTP reception time, and refuses to even
accept messages sent to non-existent local users (as opposed to
accepting it, and generating a bounce response). So, even if Thunderbird
was talking directly to a "real" SMTP server, you could easily see the
same issue.
