Sorry--I forgot that "dropped" has a specific meaning. It's been a  
while since my early days on the net when one of my preferred email  
clients was called telnet. :)

The SMTP connection was gracefully closed, although in this particular  
server's case the error message sounded like I should expect a visit  
from the police any minute. I'm not sure what SMTP server that was,  
but given my terminology mistake I suppose it's not relevant.

Nevertheless, when I sent an email with a bad "To:" email address,  
Thunderbird never received an error from the server, in spite of an  
SMTP connection that was presumably closed with an error message. I  
believe I should pay Thunderbird's bug tracker a visit on this one.
