Can't you setup NIS as a data source in /etc/nsswitch.conf - that way,
NIS users will look like regular local Unix users to all applications
that use the C library routines for retrieving user information.

Certainly, that's the way I have things setup for my LDAP-based user
information, and it seems to work well.
