Thanks very much for the replies; I'll try out your advice soon.  I now 
remember about PENDING_CLEANUP_ODDS from the manual.

I had assumed that if I didn't explicitly set either that or 
PENDING_LIFETIME, the defaults would be used, but that doesn't seem to 
have been the case, as I've not set them and my .tmda directory grows 
and grows.  I checked the changelog for the latest release and didn't 
see this mentioned as a fix; perhaps it is a bug (that if those 
variables are not set, they're not acted on)?

I will see if setting them explicitly helps...  Thanks again!
