I would guess your .qmail file is setup incorrectly - it probably 
specifies /var/spool/mail delivery instead of maildrop/maildir delivery.

Oh, except you say you're using Courier. Then, why did you set this:

MAIL_TRANSFER_AGENT = "qmail"
