Fair enough, but as I mentioned in my email, I get exactly the same  
crash when I connect with my email clients (both kmail and  
Thunderbird). (The clients actually send the EHLO <host> to  
tmda-ofmipd after the STARTTLS command.)

I'm pretty sure the exception isn't caused by non-encrypted data.

I'm not too familiar with the use of openssl, and chances are I  
wouldn't know whether I used openssl wrongly if something appears to  
be wrong. Could you suggest an example of how to use openssl to do this?
