tofmipd delay on send

I consistently have errors when sending mail to 3 or more users.
   
I am presently running tmda-ofmipd like so;
   
/usr/local/bin/tmda-ofmipd -f -R imap://localhost -u tofmipd --log 2> /var/log/tmdalog
   
It sends OK with Thunderbird while there is a 40 second wait, while
adding users causes an error on Thunderbird - it does not put the
email in the Sent folder, yet users -do- get their email.
   
I switched to Outlook and noticed that it gave me an error at 60   
seconds also with multiple users - although Outlook give the option
at that point to continue trying, which seems to allow all emails
to send without errors, given the extra time.
   
A delay appears to be associated with a delay communicating with tofmipd.
I am presently running tofmipd on port 8025. Bypassing tofmipd by
sending via port 25 sends fine.
   
I am presently running tmda-ofmipd FreeBSD 6.2 running sendmail.
   
I wonder if anyone has pointers on what could be causing the problem,
or how to monitor the situation to track this.
