The way I understand it--and I certainly could be wrong--is that tmda
injects each mail individually into the mail queue, so sending large
emails with multiple recipients may certainly block. Maybe Thunderbird
is timing out while tmda-ofmipd is still waiting for an exit status from
tmda-inject.

Try running tmda-ofmipd in the foreground with the -f flag, and perhaps
limit the number of simultaneous connections to one with
"--connections=1" as well. Hopefully, even if this doesn't solve your
problem, it will at least give you some visibility into what's
happening.
