I cannot reproduce the problem.  Maybe you can verify that your SM is
vanilla - no patches, no plugins.  Or provide a unified diff between
the working and non-working src/compose.php and src/read_body.php (for
starters - no guarantee that's where the problem is).  Does the
attachment at the bottom of the compose screen (where you say the
subject is correct show the right attachment *TYPE* and size?  For me,
using 1.4.16 it works fine.

Maybe the original mail itself is malformed.
