Percent sign password problem

      The following problem has been noticed on SquirrelMail 1.4.10a,  
which is the system used where I work - so it could be an old problem  
already solved by now.  Being new to this list, I don't know if it has  
been detected or solved already, so I am posting this just in case it  
has not.

      When passwords are introduced, the browser does encode the  
percent sign (%) before sending it to the server.  This would be not  
an issue when using SquirrelMail as the only email client - passwords  
are altered when set, but then passwords are altered also at login  
time, so they continue to match.

      However, problems arise when SquirrelMail is using as a part of  
a dual system - both IMAP web access and POP download.  The philosophy  
here is to encourage the users to set their own passwords rather than  
conserving the default password.  Hence, SquirrelMail is used for  
changing the password from the users computer.

      Afterwards, the user is given the choice to use SquirrelMail or  
Thunderbird to manage his/her e-mail.  If the user chooses  
Thunderbird, there it comes the problem: Thunderbird doesn't encode  
the percent sign the same way the browser accessing SquirrelMail does.  
  So, passwords mismatch.

      At the present time, users continue to be encouraged to set  
their own passwords, but without the percent sign.
