Upgrading SM environment

We need to upgrade the host platform that run Squirrelmail (SM) (to
FreeBSd-14.2 and PHP84 as it happens).

We have carried out the updates and have used FreeBSD packages to install a
PHP84 version of SM.  We have gotten to the point that SM is talking to the
imap service and is populating the left hand folder tree correctly as it
appears.  However, the right hand main frame is not displaying anything other
than the line:

  	Sign Out
Compose   Addresses   Folders   Options   Search   Help   Calendar

How do we discover what is causing this? and how is it fixed?
