It's not going to work.  HTML templates are partially edited in an HTML 
editor, specifically Amaya.

At this point in time this is not strictly true.  sqwebmail-specific clutter 
in the HTML files makes any HTML editing mostly useless.  I use Amaya mostly 
now to autoindent all the HTML and to verify that all the tags are correctly 
closed.

However this means that the translatable strings may span multiple physical 
lines, and have random arbitrary whitespace in the middle.

This cannot be handled by gettext directly.
