That reminded me of the (closed as INVALID) bug regarding disappearing colour
labels,

The XFCE and the Adwaita gtk theme was mentioned there too:

"And I can confirm that this issue does *not* occur if I switch my XFCE
theme from Adwaita to Greybird."

Try changing the theme, try the Greybird theme.
