Unable to send messages

Hello.

With Claws mail v3.17.7 running on UbuntuMATE Linux 20.10, whilst I am
able to receive incoming email, I am iunable to send out messages.

I get a "Connecting to <mailserver>" message displayed, and, after
extending the timeout period to 180 seconds, it still fails to send.

It simply displays "SMTP error".

Why can't I send messages, while being able to receive messages?
