Crash On Startup .87claws9

Hi,
I've been experiencing a crash right upon startup with both the .86 & .87 
versions.
I just downloaded both the .87claws9 & the .87claws9_nolock, but still have 
the same problem.

Using XP-Pro, SP1, all patches available from WindowsUpdate. Lot's of free 
disk space (5g free) & plenty of RAM (768mb).

The crash data is:
AppName: slypheed.exe
ModVer: 5.1.2600.1106
AppView: 0.0.0.0
OffSet: 000255e9
ModName: ntdll.dll

I see others with the same problem, but they appear to be related to 
aSpell. Which I had installed at one point, but no longer. I had also tried 
to remove the settings in sylpheedrc (before reinstalling), but that didn't 
help (in case it was related to aspell)........

I completely removed & reinstalled .87claws, still the same problem.

What can I try next??
