Extract the .zip into a directory of your choice, then load them in
Sylpheed using Preferences/Plugins/Load Plugins (choose the plugin .DLL
in the dialog).

Please use the first version of the plugins (from the "old" directory)
for the 0.8.11 release (plugins are version dependent).

This is done by the installer. If you talk about MAPI, this isn't
supported by Sylpheed. Some apps have their own way setting the MUA,
e.g. mozilla needs following setting them in prefs.js (somewhere in
"Application Data" dir)
  user_pref("network.protocol-handler.external.mailto", true);
  user_pref("applications.mailto", "c:\\program files\\sylpheed\\bin\\sylpheed_d.exe");
Of course you have to adjust the path to Sylpheed. (The mozilla prefs
were taken from http://www.geocities.com/pratiksolanki/ Please ask
questions regarding those settings at a mozilla forum).

Sylpheed relies on being able to write and access its files. If this is
inhibited e.g. by a virus scanner, Sylpheed will hang or crash.
It is better and sufficient to scan the .sylpheed/mimetmp solely (this
is where the attachments get extracted when executed/opened).

I also heard that Norton is not able to handle directories starting
with a dot - maybe it can handle the old 8.3 DOS notation instead
(e.g. "SYLPHE~1" for  ".sylpheeed", see the output from "dir /x").

You are talking about Norton intercepting the socket transfer (this
has nothing to do with any "default mailer" setting).
Sylpheed just uses the default socket functions from the OS.
If Norton cannot intercept it, ask Norton for support.
