A reinstall, pointing to the correct directory solved the problem. Why this wasn't done automagically when I used default placement on the first install is a mystery to me, but anyway... Pointing to the correct directory also solved my Aspell problems :-)

I think I'll wait with the plug-ins. I don't want to tempt fate again for awhile ;-)
