There have been quite long discussions on this subject on the claws/unix and sylpheed/unix list, searching the archives may reveal some other tips. A simple workaround is to create a local folder and copy the news articles there. Another approach is installing Hamster that can act as a local newsserver - I remember some claws users working that way successfully.
