A timeout without explanation, I see.

This one looks more interesting, as if you had made too many
attempts to connect with the wrong credentials or
authentication method. Hopefully, this condition will pass
after a quiet period, in which your Sylpheed will not be
trying to connect repeatedly. I recommend that you disable
automatic checking for new mail in Sylpheed for the affected
accounts and keep it so until the issue is resolved. In the
meantime, try re-generating your Yahoo app passowrd, adding it
to Sylpheed, and testing again after a day's pause.
In the meantime, I have failed to register a Yahoo mailbox,
because they seem to require a phone number capable of
receiving SMS, and probably also a WhatApp account. This is
crazy... Can I register with Yahoo mail without WhatsApp or
phone number?

Could you perhaps share the credentials of one of those test
accounts with me, so that I can test it in my Sylheed, with
the 2FA turned off? Make sure the credentials are unique
and that I cannot access your other accounts from there.
Don't bother if logging in requires an SMS confirmation.
DON'T SHARE WITH ME ANYTHING
THAT CAN COMPROMISE YOUR MAIN ACCOUNTS!
You write that you have had those accounds "for decades".
Perhaps recently they have makde "app passwords" mandatory,
and you have not generated one for Sylpheed? You did not
answer whether you had an "app password" for Sylpheed or
not.
Please, read Yahoo's instructions on accessing their e-mail
and make sure you follow them to the letter:
